Maar liefst 60.000 pond krijgt Philip Roth bij het winnen van de Man Booker International Prize (niet te verwarren met de normale Booker Prize). Het was de vierde keer dat deze tweejaarlijkse prijs werd uitgereikt. Op de lijst van genomineerden stond ook John le Carré, maar die trok zich terug uit de lijst van literaire schrijvers.

Roth was blij met de prijs: ‘One of the particular pleasures I’ve had as a writer is to have my work read internationally despite all the heartaches of translation that that entails. I hope the prize will bring me to the attention of readers around the world who are not familiar with my work. This is a great honour and I’m delighted to receive it.’

Op de foto zie je Philip Roth zitten voor een kaart van Newark. Geen toeval, want dat is de stad waar hij opgroeide. De stad ook die in de Zuckerman-romans een belangrijke rol speelt.
