Hij was al twee keer eerder genomineerd, maar drie keer is scheepsrecht voor de Zuid-Afrikaan Damon Galgut: hij won vanavond met The Promise de Booker Prize. Het boek is in het Nederlands vertaald en verschenen bij Querido onder de titel De belofte. De winnaar krijgt 50.000 Britse ponden. De schrijver zei in zijn dankwoord:

Let me say this has been a great year for African writing, and I’d like to accept this on behalf of all the stories told and untold, the writers heard and unheard, from the remarkable continent I’m part of. Please keep listening to us, there’s a lot more to come.
