‘Kind of upset, honestly, and a little embarrassed,’ tweette Banning. Collega-schrijvers reageerden met bemoedigende tweets waarin ze soortgelijke ervaringen deelden.
Join the club. I did a signing to which Nobody came, except a guy who wanted to buy some Scotch tape and thought I was the help. 🙂

At my first SALEM'S LOT signing, I had one customer. A fat kid who said, "Hey bud, do you know where there's some Nazi books?"

I hope it gets better from here. But even if you have to do it 2 by 2, thanks for having the courage to write and share and I hope your work continues to resonate with folks!

I was once invited to a crime writers' festival. Colin Dexter was on at the same time. Only one person showed up for me. We chatted for a while and I told him how glad I was that he'd come. He said, "Actually I'm Ian Rankin and I was supposed to be introducing you." @Beathhigh

When I started out, two children came to my reading. I almost left. A fellow writer told me: they came especially for you. I learned my most important lesson that day.
This year I celebrated my 20th year as writer of children’s books, but I will never forget those two.

Also, was once signing books and a woman came up with a john Grisham novel. When i pointed out it wasn’t written by me she asked if i was signing books or not! So i signed it with love from me and John Grisham….

I did an event for my second novel where I was on a panel of 4. The only thing that connected us was we all had written books with ‘Home’ in the title. There were 4 people in the audience. One per author. Keep going. We believe in you!

I once had a book launch party arranged by my publisher and the only person who showed up was my mom.

I once did a Ilibrary event where no one turned up and so the librarians actually went into the street to capture some children. The kids looked at me like I was a mouldy rice pudding. Mortified.

De tweet van Banning kent inmiddels duizenden retweets.
Wel erg, vind ik. Dan moeten ze niet zeggen dat ze gaan komen!
