Boeken die iemand kan labelen met ‘sexual conduct’ worden van de boekenlijsten van scholen in Escambia County, Florida, waaronder woordenboeken, The Guinness Book of World Records en Het dagboek van Anne Frank. Je wordt er een beetje mismoedig van als je de berichten van PEN America volgt, zondag publiceerden we een lijst van bijna 700 titels die in Orange County (ook Florida) op de lijst van verboden boeken staan.

De lijst van Escambia County kun je hier vinden. Onder de verboden boeken vinden we bijvoorbeeld I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings van May Angelou, The Handmaid’s Tale van Margaret Atwood, David Copperfield: Adapted for Young Readers van Charles Dickens, maar ook The Bible Book. Morgen begint er een rechtszaak tegen deze Book bans.

The lawsuit says the Escambia County School District and School Board violated the First Amendment rights of the students, authors, and publishers by removing books “based on ideological objections to their contents or disagreement with their messages or themes.”

Per the lawsuit, the district also violated the Equal Protection Clause of the constitution “because the books being singled out for possible removal are disproportionately books by non-white and/or LGBTQ authors, or which address topics related to race or LGBTQ identity.”
