Afgelopen maandag is bekendgemaakt dat Jayne Anne Phillips de Pulitzer Prize in de categorie ‘fictie’ heeft gewonnen met Night Watch. De andere genomineerden voor de prijs waren Amanda Gronich met Here There Are Blueberries en Shayok Misha Chowdhury met Public Obscenities.

De jury bestond dit jaar uit Sam Sacks, Lan Samantha Chang, Lydia Millet, Michael Chabon en Tayari Jones. Zij schrijven over Night Watch:

A beautifully rendered novel set in West Virginia’s Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in the aftermath of the Civil War where a severely wounded Union veteran, a 12-year-old girl and her mother, long abused by a Confederate soldier, struggle to heal.
