Een paar weken terug publiceerde The New York Times een lijst met de beste 100 boeken van de nog prille eenentwintigste eeuw. 503 personen uit het literaire veld, uiteenlopend van Sarah Jessica Parker tot Karl Ove Knausgaard, gaven aan welke tien boeken van na 31 december 1999 zij de beste vonden. Die boeken moesten wel in het Engels zijn verschenen.

Uiteindelijk blijkt De geniale vriendin van de mysterieuze Elena Ferrante het meest genoemd en dus voorlopig het beste boek van deze eeuw te zijn.

Reading this uncompromising, unforgettable novel is like riding a bike on gravel: It’s gritty and slippery and nerve-racking, all at the same time.
